Personal Letter To My Son; A Gang Member

Every day and every night, I search my soul. I am looking for the slightest hint of something that I can say, something that might get through to you.

I have asked God to help me with this crucial task. And I know that this very well may be the most difficult and important task that I have ever faced, because there is nothing more important to me than trying to convince you to get out of that destructive gang before it is too late!

I realize now that the most valuable lesson I should have taught you as a child was to develop a mind of your own. If I had taught you that, maybe by now you would not be so easily influenced.

I also wish I had talked to you more about God, because I had done so, you would have known that all of the power you will ever need already lies within you, and you would not have gone to a gang in search of it.

If I had it to do all over again, I would help you to build a strong and positive image of yourself. And then you would know that you have nothing to prove to anyone, especially the self destructive and misguided members of a gang.

If I knew then what I know now, at a very early age in your life I would have taught you the value of loving yourself, as well as others. Because had I taught you that, you would currently be congregating with groups of people with positive purposes instead of destructive ones.

If I had only taught you all of those values a long time ago, I would not be sitting here right now, fearing for your life, trying to think of something to say, something that might get through to you before it is too late!
